Natural Hair Story Chantal Maples

In this week’s natural hair story,  we are shining the spotlight on Chantal. She is a  millennial stay at home mom of two beautiful little naturalista’s, ages 6 and 3.  Here is her story…

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Chantal. I’m from Huntsville, Alabama

How long have you been natural?

3 years now

What motivated you to go natural?

At the time, I was only getting a relaxer two times a year. I realized it was unnecessary and decided to stop altogether. That and my beautician told me she wasn’t relaxing my hair anymore lol.

What are your favorite products to use?

I LOVE the Cantu brand. Their Argan Oil Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream is my favorite.  I’m also a fan of the Aussie Moist line when it comes to shampooing and detangling my hair.

What products (if any) would you never try again?

The Mane Choice brand and Creme of Nature. I know people love them, but none of their products have ever done anything for my hair. I tried to jump on the bandwagon, but I just can’t lol.

What is your go-to natural hairstyle?

I’m the twist out Queen.

Have you ever felt any insecurities when it comes to your hair?

Yes. I started out just wearing my hair curly at home because I didn’t think it looked right. It took a while for me to feel comfortable enough to wear it out in public .

Do you feel that you have ever been treated differently (in the workplace, amongst family or your peers) because of your hair?

Not really. If anything, more people gravitated towards me to learn how to do their own hair like mine.

What has been the hardest part of your hair journey?

Starting out, I watched a lot of YouTube videos. The hardest part for me was watching hair videos and failing miserably at trying certain styles on my own.  It was beyond frustrating.

What advice would you offer to those who are looking to start a natural hair journey?

Make sure you’re doing it for you. I’ve seen too many people wanting to “go natural” because it’s popular and they want the curls and glory. It’s not a trend, it’s a lifestyle. If it’s not something you really want for yourself, you’re not going to stick with it.
