Natural Hair Story Erika Parks

In this week’s natural hair story,  we are shining the spotlight on Erika Parks.  Erika is a lifestyle blogger and likes to inspire others through her mE Project. Here is Erika’s hair story…

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Erika E A Parks and I’m originally from West Virginia.  I currently live in Ohio.

How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural since 2015.

What motivated you to go natural?

I guess it was a few things really. I’d had bad experiences with relaxers and hair breakage and around this same time, my health was changing. I took a hard look at myself and I realized my hair wasn’t healthy. My sister went natural a few years prior and she started giving me tips on what I should do.

What are your favorite products to use?

Aussie 3 Minute Deep Conditioner and African Pride Shea Miracle Bouncy Curls Pudding

What products (if any) would you never try again?

Anything Shea Moisture.

What is your go-to natural hairstyle?

I would have to say a twist-out or a braid-out.

Have you ever felt any insecurities when it comes to your hair?

When I first went natural, I was really into curl definition. My curls had to be defined at all times.

Do you feel that you have ever been treated differently (in the workplace, amongst family or your peers) because of your hair?

Yes and no.  There are other members of my family that are natural so that has never been an issue. I live in a rural area so I do have people come up to me on occasion and ask questions about my hair. But even then it isn’t that often.

What has been the hardest part of your hair journey?

I started my natural hair journey by the seat of my pants I should say. I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. I transitioned and then I big chopped. But after that, it was a big question mark. At the beginning, I kind of fumbled on what my hair needed.

What advice would you offer to those who are looking to start a natural hair journey?

Do your research and be prepared. Take the time to get to know your hair.
