My nightly self care routine

For some of us, winding down each night can be a challenge.  Because we lead such busy lives, we are like that bunny that keeps going and going.  At the end of the day, we fall into bed exhausted and then wake up the next morning with brain fog to do it all over again.

Adding self-care habits to our nightly routine is one way to improve our health, both mentally and physically. When we take care of ourselves, we have more to give to those we love.

By consistently following a nightly routine, I have found that my evenings, flow so much smoother. Not only do my evenings flow smoothly, but I fall asleep faster and I am able to rest better.

When incorporating a self-care routine you need to decide what type of activities will benefit you the most. Here are some ideas to get you started.

As I prepare to wind down each evening, I start with soft, soothing music. I like to listen to instrumental jazz or nature sounds – particularly the sound of rain.  I have found a great collection of nature and ocean sounds on YouTube.

Next, I prepare for a shower.  I light scented candles for a little aromatherapy (these are my favorite) and then I take a long, hot shower. The music, candles, and water from the shower combined all help me to relax and allow my cares from the day to fade away.

Once or twice a week I set aside time to take a bath.  I add some bath salts, have my music and candles for ambiance, and I will sip a glass of wine and soak until the water starts to turn cool.

After showering, I pamper my skin from head to toe.  I make sure that I moisturize my body with either cocoa butter or shea butter.  I really love the scent of cocoa butter and it does an excellent job of hydrating my skin. I love this cocoa butter from Wild Herb Soap Company.

Next, I take care of my face. I apply toner to my face and afterward, I apply my favorite facial moisturizer (I cleanse my face prior to getting into the shower).  I also apply an under eye cream as needed to help with dark circles under my eyes.  I discuss the basics of skin care in depth here.

I like to do a few stretching exercises at night to help me sleep better.  I have found that stretching makes me feel less tense and more relaxed. According to, night time stretching improves your quality of sleep and helps to lower stress levels.

Reading is one of my favorite past times.  When I get into bed, I like to sip a hot cup of tea and read a few pages of a good book.  I enjoy reading inspirational books when winding down in bed. I am currently reading The Power of A Praying Woman by Stormie Omartian.

A nightly routine can help you relax, de-stress and prepare for a good night’s sleep. It has made a world of difference in my life, and I am pretty sure a little nightly self-care will make a world of difference for you as well.

How do you wind down each night?  Share with me in the comments.

  1. I’ve never thought about a self-care routine at night until reading this. Each part of your routine would definately do the trick, so thank you for sharing this with us.

  2. I need to get back to doing relaxation yoga before bed- it was very beneficial. I also enjoy a good cup of tea with a book before bed, but I read on my iPad- which I know doesn’t help unwind because of the blue light. Thanks for the post!

  3. I need to get in this! I think simply my generation thinks our self-care routine is scrolling online. Probably why I wake up stressed! I’m going to challenge myself to this self-care night routine! Thanks for sharing💕💕

  4. This goes well with the post I read before this about sleeping well and getting your day started early. I hope one day to have a good routine for my evenings like this.
